About the Film

As for me, cinematography can be compared to the planting of trees. If the tree gives good fruits, people start taking care of it even more. If it happens other way, nobody needs it. It is not a secret that if the film project is financially successful, there will be continuation till the franchise is demanded. Mission Impossible 1, though it did not have so much action, brought nice income to the creators and was well accepted by the audience. Therefore, the creators decided to proceed with even a better movie, Mission Impossible 2. Since the first part was poor in action, the creators invited a new director, John Woo, who is considered to be a master of action films. He can be considered as one of the most successful Chinese directors who migrated to Hollywood in the 90s. In the contrary to others, he perfectly mixed some elements of Chinese actions and Hollywood blockbusters, that almost always guarantees a perfect result. It is clearly seen in Mission Impossible 2, that can be characterised as one big trick. Besides, this film is not considered only as a sequel of the first Mission. Even Tom Cruise himself once said that Mission: Impossible II can be treated as a separate full-grown film. And I agree with him.

Director’s Work

John included a large number of spectacular action scenes in the film. You need race? Okey, here you are. You need fighting and shootings? You can easily see it in the scene in the pharmaceutical skyscraper company. You still need some show? Welcome to see it in the final episode of the film, an entirely action row. Thus, the film is full of different explosions, destructions,

The film also impresses with the first scene of Tom Cruise’s climbing the rock without any equipment. Then the film looks like a typical action movie with special effects. But talking into account the franchise, John came very far from the original theme. While the first Mission Impossible was full of espionage features and lacked action, the second Mission Impossible film is full of action without any espionage aspects. Therefore, the film stands out as if it were a separate project, not a continuation of Mission 1.  skirmish, races, and fighting scenes. It makes you watch it with your mouth open. At that time, John managed to create such a high quality action that can be competitive even today. I should point out the final row of action scenes that starts with a race on bikes and ends with a fighting scene reminding Mortal Combat. I can’t but mention that John shot all scenes in a very stylish manner with the sense of filming and total understanding of the screen composition. Moreover, fantastic landscapes of Australia make a film a very beautiful work.

Plot of Mission Impossible 2

The almost absence of espionage events influenced not only the style, but the plot of the movie as well. Because if the film were based on espionage actions, the creator would add more unexpected turns. But this film is different. Its plot is simpler and if a perfect match to the genre of typical pop corn movies. The elements of espionage movie are seen very rarely. In general, the plot, where a kind of a superman is saving the Earth from dangerous virus, is very simple and even primitive, I would say. When watching the 1st part, you may obviously see what will be in the end, but could not guess certain events, in this film everything is much clearer. Almost from the very beginning of the film, it is clear what the end will be. I certainly will not say who will be dead, who alive, you will see everything yourself.
However, I am not disappointed. Still, there are some unexpected scenes, especially numerous moments when certain characters act as other characters due to the masks on their faces. Therefore, the film is rather interesting. Surely, it should thank the romantic side of the plot that was both the advantage and disadvantage of the story. Why it is a minus? Because it is too dramatic, as for me. Moreover, the relationships between the characters develop so quickly…but nowadays it may happen so, I am not used to it still. Moreover, this romantic line not only showed another side of the main hero, but became the key of the plot, its central idea. The hero was not only saving the world from the evil, but helping his beloved. It is good because such turn will please both men and women.

Of Course Tom Cruise and Other Actors

As for me, I have always thought that Tom Cruise is an extremely talented actor. And Mission Impossible 2 is another proof of his talent. In the 1st Mission, Tom was very young and his character was quite simple. But here he is different. Tom is more courageous, he has another style. Besides, he shows other sides of his nature. Dougray Scott, as a representative of evil, a bit overacted, in my opinion. But acting of Richard Roxburgh was rather cool. I think he is the best representative of evil in this movie. He is the one who really can be a deserving rival of Hunt (Tom Cruise) because he’s cold-blooded, prudent, and sly villain. Ving Rhames, Brendan Gleeson, and Anthony Hopkins did their best and made their episodic characters very bright! I want to stop on Anthony Hopkins and say that though he played an episodic role, his only presence in the film makes the movie more valuable and attractive. Ving Rhames played for a longer time than in the first film. I liked it because his acting is rather pleasant to watch. And of course, Thandie Newton..she is that rare case when an actress is talented and looks very sexy and attractive at the same time.

Music

The music by Hans Zimmer is a real masterpiece. I think you will agree if I call it even legendary after the release of the movie. Hans created a very rich sound and melody. It added to the dynamism of the story, especially its ‘latin manner’. In general, being based on rock sound, synthesizer and choral singing, the music is a real high-quality product. Let’s look at the main theme of the film that Hans perfectly arranged to the rock manner and added nice guitar sound. I think, it is something you should listen to, but not read about.

Blu-ray features

Mission: Impossible II comes to Blu-ray with an MPEG-2 encoded 1080p transfer framed in its original 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio. I suppose, the most important aspect of this transfer is its high level of details, which is superior to the one seen in Mission Impossible 1 on Blu-ray disc. For instance, up-close shots of human faces show us fine textures and nuances that were dull in Mission: Impossible. Colors are also more vibrant and pleasing. However, the print is fairly grainy and noisy in spots. All in all, Mission: Impossible II shows us a sharper, more pronounced image than its predecessor on Blu-ray, but it still has its small drawbacks.

Interesting Facts

Imbd does not only rate films, but can provide us with some interesting facts about them. Not everyone reads them or pays slighteast attention. But I think, you will be interested in them since they reveal some hidden sides of filming that you would never know.
  •  It happens at about 1h 50 mins. For the "knife-in-the-eye" scene, Tom Cruise demanded that a real knife must be used, and that it should stop exactly one quarter-inch from his eyeball, but not somewhere vaguely near his eye, as John Woo initially suggested. The knife was connected to the cable which was measured accurately in order to achieve the impressive effect and Cruise insisted that Dougray Scott should use all his strength in the ensuing struggle.
  •  The impressive rock climbing sequence was shot at Dead Horse Point in Utah. Tom Cruise was on cables that were then digitally removed. Ron Kauk was the climbing double and the overhang stunt was performed by main stunt double, Keith Campbell. John Woo was so scared every time but "Tom insisted on doing it".
  •  During the filming in Sydney, Australian newspapers mistakenly reported that lead actor Tom Cruise was acting like a high-maintenance diva by sending out a memo to extras and bit part players telling them not to look him in the eye. This was not so. Actors in the horse track sequence were instructed not to look or make eye contact with Cruise during filming, because in several dailies shots, extras (who were star struck) were looking straight at him and pointing, destroying the shot.
  • It is at around 4 mins. The scene where Tom Cruise "peels off his face" to reveal Dougray Scott was achieved in one shot by shooting both actors against a green screen. Tom, not wearing a mask, was simply told to place his hand in a pre-arranged position under his chin and pull his hand across his face. Scott wore a usual mask with sensors which could provide a computer with a three-dimensional view of his face. He after that peeled off this mask to finish the scene. Cruise's face was superimposed on the mask as it is pulled away and the two images morphed together in the computer; the background of the 747 cabin was added in to replace the green screen. (Watch the scene with frame advance and you will see a slight transitional 'swirl' on the mask halfway through the scene). Kevin Yagher contributed some more traditional latex mask effects for other face-peeling scenes.

Conclusion

I would put 9/10 to Mission Impossible 2 for the absence of espionage elements if I were the strictest critic of the Earth. But tastes differ. It is actually one of my favourite films. It is very entertainment, dynamic, spectacular, and extremely beautifully shot action film. Since my mark 9/10 does not let to call this work a masterpiece, the actors could not be better. I was nervous every minute Tom was in danger. Therefore, I think even without espionage elements, you can enjoy Mission: Impossible II! I recommend!

About the Film
The director of the film, Anne Fletcher, has started her bright career with the success of the film Step Up. After two years of its release, Fletcher was already known as a perspective director and an expert in comedies and melodramas. She decided to start working on a humorous melodrama with the script written by Aline Brosh McKenna, and Katherine Heigl and James Marsden starring.
Both actors seem to be a good couple. But there is one big ‘BUT’: everyone states that it is very hard to work with Katherine Heigl because she has very high self-appraisal, which is also strengthened by her mother who accompanies her daughter at every filming. The character of Heigl is responsible for organisation of wedding ceremonies, and she has already organised 27 of them (that is where the title of the film comes from). However, she is still a single woman. She is in sympathy with her boss (Edward Burns), and at the same time she meets a charming writer (in fact, he is a journalist who writes newspaper colons about women), whose role is played by James Marsden. Then a light-minded sister of the heroine appears, and the boss of Heigl’s heroine falls in love with her. Poor Heigl, she is standing on the crossroads and she still has to open people’s eyes, lose and again find her happiness, and turn out to be the most candid woman. Overall, everything happens according to the laws of genre.
Plot and Actors
In general, the plot written by Aline Brosh McKenna is developing very well. It does not stay on one place and gives the audience food for thought, revealing the essence of the characters to us. This is the biggest advantage of the film, as for me. Every character of the film receives

As I have already said, the characters are developed very well. Another question is how the actors managed to play their roles. As for Katherine Heigl, I am glad that she did not try to protrude very often with her look plainly saying that she is a genius actress and audience and critics do not understand a lot in acing. In most cases, she really makes us believe that she is a nice lonely woman who doesn’t see an inch before her nose. But we know that happy end is waiting for her, and tender emotion – for us.
enough attention. You can feel what they feel, and you clearly see their advantages and disadvantages. From time to time, you may even start thinking how you would act in this or that situation. Thus, the fans of this genre can have a good time in front of the screen, while watching the peripeteias of a woman’s search for love. Of course, some may see 27 Dresses as another one-time sweet family movie. I recommend you to watch this film in good mood because it may make you nervous by its lusciousness (but it’s a typical feature of a romantic comedy).

James Marsden plays distinctly, but without a spark in his eyes, as if something restrains him. However, his smile and pure speech will certainly attract a whole women audience of the film. As for me, I also liked Edward Burns, perhaps, because his character has more cold blood and reasonableness. He perfectly fits the role of the serious boss, and his character is marked by not see the world through pink glasses, he is far from romanticism before meeting the heroine of Malin Akerman. At the moment of shooting 27 Dresses, Akerman was treated as a good actress of romantic comedies (from The Heartbreak Kid, Heavy Petting). And again she received the role of so to say silly little thing who can perform somewhat childish actions. I should say that there are a lot of heroines of such type, and Malin is not the beast as well as not the worst of them.

About the Film
When I was watching this comedy for the 1st time, I did not expect it to produce such impression on me. I thought it would be another American comedy for one watch. But it turned out to be much better.
At the beginning, we see two stories of two main characters, narrating us how they appeared in Vegas. Each of them had his own way of getting there, and they accidently meet. After this meeting, their life changes considerably: meeting, alcohol, wedding…a good start for an exciting story.

The movie has a lot of memorable and funny episodes. As for humour, by the way, there is enough if it in the film. And there is no this preoccupied with sex American humour you might think about. Everything is perceived very easily, and funny atmosphere is present during the whole film, nicely matching its interesting plot. When you watch the film for the 1st time, you are really interested how the relationships between the main characters will develop, what will be with their marriage, and what will happen in the end. The events develop in a usual way and have quite a sweet ending. Of course, happy end is predictable from the beginning, and it makes the film even more positive.
Director and Actors
What Happens In Vegas has been shot very well. I would not point out any extremely talented directors or script writers, but the film is of a high quality. The work of cameraman is visible indeed due to bright filming in general. The film is very beautiful and colorful. It also has some simple and melodious songs that create a light and easy background. In general, the film is not stressful, but on the contrary, very easy to watch. Besides, I should mention a couple of words about actors.
The interest to this film is surely so high because of the actors starring in it, in particular, Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz. Of course, they are irreproachable actors, though I should admit that did not respect them that much before watching this comedy. But Ashton really amazed me, his acting was wonderful, natural, and surely he looked very well:) Cameron Diaz also did a good job! In general, I should say that all actors of the film acted pretty naturally and realistically. But in my opinion, this movie is very much obliged to these two main characters. But for them, the film would lose more than a half of its audience.

About the Film
In Her Shoes is a modern melodrama with a shade of drama and comedy. This film turned out to be long and true-to-life. I liked a lot about the film, and, probably, I would like it even more, but to tell the truth, I did not like one actress, Toni Collette. There was something unpleasant and repulsive about her, and for some reason I did not entirely believed her acting, though she has a nice career, and she has already played numerous roles in a number of good films. Well, many men, many minds. Nevertheless, the film is rather nice: it demonstrates a very lifelike and touching story.
The movie shows us how one woman helps her sister in a tough moment, but the latter slept with her man and betrayed her sister, who was always ready to help. At this point, their roads are separated, and we see how two close sisters are gradually drifting apart and become nearly strangers to each other. A mean sister finds a letter in her father’s house, telling that her granny is alive. Then, the girl goes to her, and we witness a touching story, whose idea is very interesting and original. However, the film seems a bit lengthy to me.
Director and Actors
I was glad to see Shirley MacLaine in this film. Despite her advanced age, the actress still feels confident in front of the camera and acts wonderfully. I like this actress and the films with her starring. But speaking about this movie, I should say that it depends a lot on Cameron Diaz. Like the abovementioned films, In Her Shoes might have also lost a lot of viewers unless Cameron had played in it. As for me, I also like this actress, but not for her appearance. I think she looks a bit extraordinary in comparison with other film stars and beautiful models. Well, her look is not typical and common. But she is very talented. She has charm and fascination that make her such a sweet and nice woman. Her acting is great in this film. Moreover, one can call her heart and soul of the movie.
If Toni Collette were changed into another actress, I might like this film even more. But even if not, it is a good thing to watch at least once. Perhaps, its only disadvantage is its length. This point is addressed to the director, of course. I think, the film could have been done shorter and more showy. But I should admit that the director made a good decision to expand the genre of the movie. When I started watching it, I thought it would be another comedy, but the film turned out to be deeper and lifelike. This is its special appeal.

Conclusion

You can have a nice time, watching 27 Dresses with a loved person. You may not laugh a lot, despite its comedy genre, but you’ll certainly get a good supply of romance. This representative of romantic comedy is far from the worst one, so I recommend it. I think, you will especially like its end.
What Happens In Vegas is a nice comedy with professional actors. It is really pleasant to watch. You receive only positive emotions, the feeling of easiness, and a wish to watch this movie one more time.
In Her Shoes is very different from What Happens In Vegas. It has a real shade of drama, and this shade is shown well and appropriately. It has also the features of a comedy, but the presence of dramatic episodes makes film very interesting and worth attention of the audience. The film balances between the lives of two sisters and their grandmother. It shows us an interesting story revealing the feelings and emotions of its characters who lacked mother’s and granny’s love. We also witness a touching story of two sisters who were entirely different women.

Tom Cruise - Legend/All The Right Moves/T.A.P.S./ (Box Set) (DVD) Review

This DVD is one of my oldest gifts connected with Tom Cruise. Though the films on it were shot a long time ago, it is a real treasure for Tom Cruise’s fans since the movies show us how he started his career and what his first roles were. Now, I will review all three films separately and make a small conclusion about each of them.

Film Setting
First of all, I should say that the Legend turned out to be a real legend and completely corresponds to its title. The film can be called a classic example of the fairy tale popular in all ages.
The most impressive about the film is its setting, its entourage. The film was shot in 1985; thus, we cannot judge computer graphics very strictly, but we can notice great efforts of make-up artists and actors who managed to recreate fairy-tale creatures starting from gnomes and finishing with trolls. Unicorns are also a very attractive element of Legend.
The forest is really magical, and the demonic underground in the end is realistically gloomy and nasty. The picture and outer paraphernalia are inimitable. I would like to tell more, but it is better to see it once than to hear about it 100 times. In my opinion, the film is worth watching.
Story and Sound
The story is a pure fairy-tale, starting from the characters and ending with the episode of the death of the unicorn as well as the travelling of friends aimed at the renewal of balance in the world. Well, as I have already said, it’s a classical story in its best manifestation.
The soundtrack of the film completely corresponds its theme. The voices of the characters, especially evil ones, very well add to overall positive impression from the film.
The Starts
Another key to success are the stars taking part in film creation. First of all, I can’t but mention starring actors of the Legend: Tom Cruise (reminding me an American Mowgli, so to say), Mia Sara (a beautiful princess), and less famous actor in make-up Tim Curry (representing Darkness). The post of director is occupied by Ridley Scott, not the last name in filming industry as well. But the actors of secondary roles have also done their job very professionally, if not perfectly.
Conclusion
The Legend is a fantasy for ages, a classical immortal fairy tale that will be not lose its popularity even after 30-40 years after its creation. It impresses with its atmosphere, quality and evokes the feeling of childish delight and kind memories about filming traditions of the past.

He is lifeless who is faultless
Every person has to make a choice in their life concerning who (or even what) they are going to become. Usually, we prefer to have an interesting and prestigious work, big beautiful mansion, wonderful spouse, a lot of children, and then we will reach the top of our Everest. However, not everyone manages to realise all plans. The moral of the film is quite simple, and it lies in the subtitle of this paragraph.
The Story
A young boy from a football team, Stefen Djordjevic (Tom Cruise) is dreaming about better life, and in order to realise his dream, he just needs to show his best in the nearest football match. From the first look, the plot seems as easy as ABC, but it is not so. Stefen as well as his trainer Nickerson (Craig Nelson) is very ambitious and always gives priority to his own opinion. Moreover, the boy is never afraid to express his opinion to his trainer in a rude form, that leads to the conflict, which become the basis of the plot. Each of the characters makes a mistakes, but this helps others understand their failures and admit their guilt. Main characters seem to show us that mistakes are necessary to realize some things in our lives, they are like ‘right moves’ on the track of every person.

So, the philosophic idea is quite simple, but its existence makes the film not a typical entertainment for the youth, but something bigger, something that makes them think.
Acting
I can tell only positive words about actors of the film. Young Tom Cruise looks very interesting at the dawn of his career. I would say that this role in not worse than his next roles in the films. So, Craig T. Nelson and Tom Cruise is a successful ‘mixture’ so to say. They look nice and lively, and give us another reason to watch the movie.
Conclusion
It is an interesting, dynamic, and quite sensible film that can be watched in any mood, and a person will receive a good supply of emotions flavoured with an unpretentious and pleasant soundtrack.

The Story
The film captures with its main idea: when they plan to close the Academy, some guys rebel against it. However, everything goes too far, somebody has to give his life for it. But is this worth it? I think, everyone can give his or her own answer to this question.
Acting
I would like to point out the acting crew, in particular three main actors, Timothy Hutton, Sean Penn, and Tom Cruise. For me, Timothy Hutton is not a very familiar actor since I have never seen any film with his except for this one. He acts very nicely. You believe his character, and want to go on believing, but his commitment to the affair makes him a bit reckless, and he realizes his mistake only at the end.
As for Sean Penn, he cannot act in a bad way. I liked his character in the film most of all. He supported his friend, not the idea, and managed to persuade his friend to quit. Moreover, it was pleasant to see him being 20 years old :)
And finally, Tom Cruise. If we don’t take into account his episodic roles, the role in this film is his first meaningful role, as for me. And he coped with it perfectly. It is interesting to watch how he plays his first role and compare it with his later ones.
Conclusion
In general, the film is not bad. It outlines the question: what is more important in life: money or honour? And who needs war? It is worth watching and thinking.

12 Rounds

"I'm training the world's most dominant pug. He's going through a bulking phase."

The Work of Director
To begin with, it was one of the most disappointing things about the film. Renny Harlin is a Finn director who has never been a genius in his field, but he showed that he could shoot good thrillers and action films. But this film is a step backwards for Harlin. In my opinion, the film absolutely lacks original ideas, special effects, dramatic scenes, and interesting work of actors. I would call it a dynamic, but totally trite and secondary action movie who could be a good start for a beginner. But for Harlin, it looks like slapdash or careless work that does not correspond to his professional level.
I can't but mention the economy of budget of staging such a valuable and costly, judging by the plot, action film. The car chases look worse than in the Speed of 1994. The explosions are shot using close-u, without detailed elaboration and voluminous vision. Of course, action is not on the lowest level, but very close to it. Another hit at Harlin, whose films almost always were a visual 'banquet'.
Mixture of Plots
All in all, if we do not take into account the work of the director and do not expect 12 Rounds to be a great movie, the films is quite OK for watching once. It gives you some knowledge about popular American action films and cinematography of previous years. To my humble opinion, the film is a mixture of popular scenarios that do not make it original, including the one of the Speed, Die Hard 3 and some features of the Saw. They even may make you bored because you might have already seen all that. Fortunately, high dynamics of the plot does not let you fall asleep.
Interesting Facts
  • In order to shoot a car chase scenes, John Cena had to train with the New Orleans Police Department do his own stunt driving.
  • The scenes where Danny is driving the fire truck were created with John Cena sitting in the cab, but the second steering wheel was hidden in the cab where a stunt driver concealed off camera controlled the vehicle.
  • For every day of filming, director Renny Harlin rewarded the most valuable crew member of that day with a bottle of Finlandia vodka.
  • Renny Harlin's (director's) son Lucas appears as the little boy with the hat in the street car.
  • Renny Harlin appears at least three times in the beginning of the film. Besides, at the end of the film, you can hear Renny's voice over the radio in the helicopter that Miles Jackson tries to escape in.

The Marine

"I hate cops... and rock candy."
Perhaps, everyone remembers himself watching action films in their childhood, when you switched on TV and watched anything there was there. Maybe not, but I used to do so) So, The Marine seems to me an effort to recreate an action film of that kind. And this effort is not the worst, but not the best as well.

Somewhat Unnatural
I would say so: the smallest explosion at the petrol station looked like the one in Hiroshima, and the film shows a number of such explosions.
Unlike 12 Rounds, I liked this film more. The creators have done a good job, designing explosions, dynamic chases, skirmish, and fighting. Of course, the main character looks like a real bulletproof superman since to drive a car with one hand on the speech of 120km/h and to hold a flak jacket and protect oneself from bullets is a bit difficult for a usual person. The cars are also supernatural: it can be all in holes from bullets, including the engine, but drives as a new. Paradox! The main villain is also not bad: after receiving a number of good hits and exploding in the house, he still is capable of move quickly and fight, even after his face and body has completely burnt.
Humour
To tell the truth, after 12 Rounds, I would not expect to laugh for almost all 90 minutes. But the film turned out to be full of humorous situations. The characters use classic cliché and the classics of genre. The story is shown in a humorous way, and the main characters, Robert Patrick and Anthony Ray Parker, don't stop cracking jokes.
Interesting Facts
  • The movie was actually shot two years before it was released to theatres.
  • On the back of the cop car at the ManZe gas station, the bumper reads "Donated by your local drug dealer."
  • In the car chase scene, one of the accomplice shouted ''he is like terminator'' followed by Robert Patrick checking on the looking glass. In fact, Robert Patrick himself was starred in the movie Terminator.
Price & Availability
I recommend to purchase it through base.com for £ 5.59. You can also order it on Amazon, but there it costs £ 5.85 + £1.99 for postage & packaging.
Conclusion
12 Rounds - 3/10
The Marine - 6/10
12 Rounds is a typical representative of an old school action film, that could be popular and acceptable 10-15 years ago, but on the market of modern blockbusters, it looks cheap and weak.
The Marine also reminds me a film from the previous age, but its humour completely saves the situation. I laughed almost till the very end; thus, I recommend to watch it.

The Last Samurai (Blu-Ray) Review

"I come to this place of my ancestors and I remember. Like this blossoms we are all dying. To know life in every breath, every cup of tea, every life we take. The way of the warrior. That is Bushido".
It may seem strange that a woman is writing a review on the film about samurais and warriors. However, if you look closer, there are a number of reasons for that. First, it is Tom Cruise starring, of course. Having seen almost all his films, I have something to say about all of them. This one is not an exception. Moreover, this film shows people with strong spirit that women usually lack. It also describes historical events and makes you consider some philosophic questions as well.

Historical Background
70s years of the 19th century. Japan stops its multiyear isolation and establishes contact with the West. However, the courtiers of the Emperor of the Country of the Rising Sun have different attitude to the happening events and changes. Some of them understand the necessity of adopting the achievements of the West so that Japan would be able to occupy a good place in the modern world. Others use the newly appeared technology for their benefit and profit. But there is also the third category of people who cannot accept the changes at all, thinking that they would destroy the traditional pattern of life, which has been maintained for centuries. Exactly in this period, the events of the film take place.
The Plot and Main Characters
The Last Samurai tells the story about Nathan Algren, an American who came to Japan in order to teach soldiery to the Emperor soldiers. He gets in the captivity of the revolting samurais under the leadership of Katsumoto. This film shows us another Tom Cruise, not the one you can see in Mission Impossible or the War of the Worlds. In the Last Samurai, Cruise felt his character very well. This is a former captain of the American army, who took part in the war operation against the Indians. At the very beginning we see him as a degraded man hating himself for participating in this operation. Algren can only fight and kill, and when there is no one to kill, he goes to drink whiskey, dreaming about death. Perhaps, he would continue such life unless the destiny did not lead him to the samurai.
Consequently, Algren gets acquainted with a completely new world. It is the world of people who have been for centuries on the watch of their motherland and devoted their whole life to protecting of their folk. These are people who are patient, self-disciplined, and aimed at reaching self-perfection. They can not only, but also think a lot. This is this world that made Algren change his viewpoint on life and choose another way, the way of the samurai.
Samurai
All samurais are very interesting. First of all, Katsumoto is an experienced and wise warrior who is totally devoted to Japan and treats their revolt as a way of serving his motherland. Though Katsumoto understands that his time will be soon due, he cannot accept that the Emperor, whom he earlier taught and has to protect, is under the influence of the advisors who care about their own benefit ratrher than that of the country. Ken Watanabe played the role of Katsumoto, and his acting was as brilliant as that of Tom Cruise playing the role of Algren.
Other samurais turned out to be not worse, but the same bright: courageous and fearless Ujio, brave Nobutada, the son of Katsumoto and silent warrior, who accompanied Algren everywhere. Another memorable character is Taka, the sister of Katsumoto who fell in love with Nathan. The relationship between these actors is also very interestingly shown. They are not explicit, but rather hidden under the mask of politeness and restraint. Only having a close look can show you how strong and deep they are in reality.
Fighting Scenes
Battle scenes are amazing. However, they might make you feel a bit nervous, but at the same time think a bit. I still recollect the moment of the attack on samurai village. Other catchy scenes include battles between samurai and the Emperor army, especially the last horse attack. When watching these scenes, I understood that none of them was right or wrong. In fact, both samurai and the Emperor army were fighting for their country. But, as it often happens during the civil war, fighting for different purposes and principles leads to numerous deaths of courageous and worthy people who could bring more benefit being alive.
I would recommend watching the film in Blu-ray only those who like films about wars because, you will see armies running on you, horses falling on you etc. It may make you feel nervous at times, especially if you are an emotional person, as I am. But feeling yourself on the battle field is a deserving thing.
Philosophy
As I have already mentioned, the film is pushing you to analyze some philosophical issues. In particular, the end of the film is a good food for reflection. Who is the last samurai? Is it Algren, who perceived the ideals of samurai, or Katsumoto, who devoted his all life to these ideals? As for me, I could not give a final answer to this question.
Disadvantage
The only disadvantage of the Last Samurai, to my mind, is the excessive denigration of Omura, Japanese minister who was the main opponent of Katsumoto. I suppose, it would be more interesting to see this man not as a timid dealer, but as a man who thinks about the destiny of his nation not less than Katsumoto did. Omura understood the necessary of modernisation of the country in all spheres. But since the film was created to fit various categories of audience, the creators might have needed the image of the main miscreant.
Price & Availability
The price of the Blu-ray disk is about £8. I would recommend you to purchase it on Amazon for £ 7.98.
Interesting Fact
Tom Cruise nearly lost his head during the shooting of one episode. His colleague, Hiroyuki Sanada, had to stop the sward in a centimetre before Cruise's head. According to the Japanese actor, he was making a movement towards Tom's head when the latter was on the mechanic pedestal, but there was some technical failure that did not let Tom dodge a blow. Fortunately, in a split second, Hiroyuki managed to lead his fatal hit in a side.
Conclusion
The Last Samurai tells about the mixture of completely different cultures and civilizations, about the collision and interweaving of old and new, about the issues of courage, honour, and the place of a man in life. Sometimes you can be anxious, and sometimes feel calm as if you are meditating, like the heroes of the film.
"- Tell me how he died.
- I will tell you how he lived".
